Information

All should stay clear of these potentially dangerous beasts-- not much is confirmedly known about Toadstools, except for the fact that they are able to possess minds if they wish. The limitations of these powers are unknown, however, it has been observed that when it has taken over another mind, the Toadstool itself remains still. There have also been sightings of a singular Toadstool able to control more than one creature. It is believed that so long as one does not make eye contact or come in physical contact with the spores it releases, you can escape the area without being possessed, however others believe that so long as the Toadstool has something within its vision, it will succumb to its mind control if it should wish.

There have been a handful of claims that Toadstools were surprisingly lazy and passive creatures, nor were any eyes observed on the mushroom caps growing out of its head or back. However, there was one notable thing in common with each of those accounts-- the Toadstool was observed during the daylight hours. Still yet, it is not recommended to approach one at any time, without extreme caution.

The slime these creatures secrete has a very faint green glow and shimmers iridescently, the shine changing colors in the light. Those who come across it should take the vivid colors as a warning sign however, as it is poisonous to ingest, causing nightmarish visions.

Toadstools have been sighted along the denser growing areas along the western coast, most often within the Ponderer's Grove, able to camouflage effectively amongst the fungi that grows abundantly around the mysterious glistening swamp.

Development

Written by Art Team Lead Hollulu:

Toadstool was the third concepted beast design, created on February 25th, 2021. The design went through a couple additions before its finalized appearance, gaining more mushrooms, an eye on the mushroom on its head, and more sinister lighting.

"With Dustbunny and Optimal illusion being my first designs, I wanted to keep up a theme of fun wordplay with my beasts. I thought that Jeremy, who likes frogs, should get to have a frog-like creature in his game. Thinking of wordplay to go with it, the word that stuck to my brain was 'toadstool', which felt like a straightforward route since I'm very interested in mycology, especially ophiocordyceps, fungi that essentially make things puppeteered zombies. I also thought that the very dangerous psychedelic effect of licking toads felt like it meshed well thematically with the toxic effects of some types of fungi, and that they made sense in the same creature. Mother 3's terrifying island was also an inspiration!" - Hollulu.

The Sheen foil was chosen with the vision of its nightmare-inducing toad slime in mind, and it also felt fitting for a water glistening look.

Written by Game Designer J. Evan Raitt:

Right from the jump this Beast was going to be about stealing your opponent's Beasts, but part of the game goals was to limit or even outright not allow the complete taking of your opponent's Beast and plop it on your Team given how much of a swing that could be. Instead I went with a more basic type of steal that would only take Power. However, there are some other ways you might be able to use the way the card is worded to your advantage.
